Homicide charges in death of child at youth Program

The Montrose District Attorney's office said today, the 7th Judicial District Grand Jury finished its investigation into the death of 15 year old Caleb Jensen. Child abuse and homicide charges have now been filed in the case.

The incident happened May 2, 2007 while Caleb was attending the Alternative Youth Adventures program. Colorado authorities say Caleb died from a staph infection -- and that camp personnel observed signs of the infection but neglected to properly care for it. The company's license was suspended at the time.

As a result of the Grand Jury investigation, numerous charges have been files in Caleb's death including:

Community Education Centers, Inc. indicted for the crimes of Criminally Negligent Homicide, and child abuse resulting in death.

Alternative Youth Adventures Inc has been indicted for the crimes of Criminally Negligent Homicide, and child abuse resulting in death.

Dr. Keith Hooker has been indicted for the crimes of Criminally Negligent Homicide, and child abuse resulting in death.

Mr. James Omer has been indicted for the crimes of Criminally Negligent Homicide, and child abuse resulting in death.

Mr. Ben askins has been indicted for the crimes of Manslaughter, and child abuse resulting in death.

The DA's office says possible penalties for these crimes range from one to 12 years in the Department of Corrections, plus parole with possible fines up to $750,000.

The scheduled first appearance for these individuals is August 25th in Montrose District Court.
