Child details abuse in Kelley trial
January 8, 2007
By Andrew Wellner
PALMER -- A teenaged girl described
for a judge today a “hell hole” she and her foster siblings endured
while in the care of Sherry and Patrick Kelley two years ago.
The girl, who identified herself in
court as B.K., through tears spoke of being starved, sleep deprived,
regularly beaten and forced to do manual labor. The girl was the
Kelley’s eldest of five children in the care.
“They were meant to be parents to
me and not slave drivers and boot camp leaders,” she told Superior
Court Judge Michael Wolverton.
The girl testified at the ongoing
sentencing hearing for the Kelley couple.
Sherry Kelley in previous hearings
has denied allegations she beat her children at their home near Big
Lake.
Wolverton said from the bench that
he hopes today to conclude the hearing, which covered three days in
November, by pronouncing sentence. The hearing resumed this morning
after a month-long break.
Sherry Kelley, 37, faces up to six
years in prison on one count of assault and one of criminal
nonsupport to which she pleaded no contest. Patrick Kelley, 45,
pleaded no contest to one count of child endangerment, according to
a plea agreement reached with prosecutors. He is credited with 17
months toward that sentence.
