Justice Delayed

It has been almost a year since fourteen-year-old Martin Lee Anderson died after being brutalized by a group of correctional officers at a Panama City boot camp. His death touched off such a public furor that the whole concept of juvenile boot camps came under scrutiny and the camp where Anderson died was closed.

But there is unfinished business, and it seems long overdue. In the wake of the furor, Gov. Jeb Bush appointed Tampa area State Attorney Mark A. Ober to investigate Anderson's death and, presumably, file charges against any of the guards who may have acted improperly. Since the incident was captured on videotape, members of Anderson's family, as well as civil rights groups like the NAACP, are wondering what's taking so long. No official explanation has been offered, but Ober's office says the investigation remains active.

Even Gov. Bush is growing impatient. "It has taken way too long," Bush said this week. "Our expectation was that this was going to be complete in the summer and I hope the process will be completed soon and that there will be some sense of justice no longer being denied."

Civil rights leaders say they will organize a silent protest at Gov.-elect Charlie Crist's inauguration Jan. 2 if the investigation isn't wrapped up soon. Hopefully that won't be necessary. Justice delayed is justice denied, and Martin Lee Anderson deserves justice.
