On August 25, 2003, 15-year old Michael Renner-Lewis, III, a 6-foot, 165-pound autistic boy, died after he was restrained on his first day of school at Parchment High in Colorado.

According to news articles, Michael had a seizure and became agitated. At around 12:30 p.m. four staff attempted to calm him down. According to the police, they each grabbed his limbs and put him on the ground, face-down, in a room behind the school auditorium. They proceeded to restrain him until a family member arrived at 1:25 p.m. to take him home. He was unconscious on the floor and when she tried giving him CPR it was too late. Michael was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m.

The autopsy report said the cause of Michael's death was a combination of prolonged restraint and cardiac arrest. Two years later, Michael's mom is still fighting to be sure his death was not in vain.
