Labi also uncovered that, in 1997, Strawn pleaded guilty to reckless conduct and DUI after an incident in which he was accused of kicking his stepdaughter, choking his wife and firing his gun in a drunken rage. A judge sent Strawn to an alcohol treatment program for six months, and he was permitted to retire from the Atlanta police force the day before he would have been fired.

Strawn is sober now, a religious man who never takes off his "What Would Jesus Do?" bracelet and likes to pray with the kids he transports. Still, there are problems sometimes. Three years ago he took a 17-year-old Alabama girl to a school in Jamaica that is run by the company that owns Casa by the Sea. The next day, the girl ran out of a classroom and committed suicide by leaping off a cliff.

Parents should beware when hiring a teen transport company. The industry is unregulated and therefore anything goes.

Here's a message from Mr. Rick Strawn:

As a recovering person myself, I have been able to gain expertise both personally and professionally in the field of addiction. The "addiction personality" is by no means limited to any one source. Whether it relates to alcohol, drugs, sex, food, lifestyle, or even a general lack of morals or character, the addiction is merely a way of coping. Both my wife, Susan, and myself are deeply motivated to assist these kids as well as their parents as they search for a solution.

"My experience with these kids is that they are good kids making not so good choices. Without exception, they are all of above average intelligence also. They primarily need some focus and direction that, unfortunately, we as parents are really unable to offer. Mostly because they, the kids, won't listen to us "old folks". Not because we don't love them or that they don't love us, but because they are hooked into the choices that they are making and cannot see the long term effects that those choices result in. I say this from a lot of experience both personal and professionally.

As to who I am, my experience, and my assistance to adults in need, I have been involved in adult addiction interventions and, as a recovering person myself, share my experiences, strengths, and hopes as a part of the intervention process. I present options to the adults in need and try to show them that there is hope and a light at the end of that dark tunnel of addiction. I know; I have been there
.

I am a member of the Georgia Addiction Counselors Association (www.gaca.org) and The Association For Addiction Professionals (www.naadac.org).
