Military Academy Missing Proper Permits

08.16.2006

A military academy attended by a student who died during a school-sponsored camping trip has been operating out of a Florida strip mall without the proper permits, city officials said.

Back to Basics Military Academy was sent a cease and desist letter Tuesday giving it 10 days to get a license or move, said Planning and Zoning Director, Earl Hahn. Officials said the school did not have an occupational license or a special use permit.

"They can't operate," said Jim Notarianni, Lauderhill code enforcement supervisor. "They are done here."

A call to the school Wednesday morning seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Alex Cullinane, 13, died Saturday while attending the school's four-day Training and Leadership Corps camp at Oleta River State Park in North Miami. He got out of bed in the middle of the night to tell a drill sergeant he didn't feel well and collapsed on the way to a bathroom, according to North Miami Beach police.

An autopsy found no signs of injury on Alex's body, said Detective Felix Guadarrama. The medical examiner was waiting for toxicology results to determine if dehydration, disease or a congenital condition was to blame.

The boy's mother, Dena Cullinane, said the school told her that her son was eating and drinking at the start of the camp but was later seen by students throwing food away.
