NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - A 12-year-old East Brunswick boy who accidentally shot his playmate to death while handling a loaded handgun will spend the next three years in a home for emotionally disturbed children.

Superior Court Judge Roger Daley sentenced the boy Thursday during a closed hearing in Middlesex County Family Court. The judge rejecting incarceration in favor of treatment at the Bonnie Brae Residential Treatment Center for Adolescent Boys.

Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch said the sentence was handed down after he and the boy's lawyer agreed the child, whose name was not released due to his age, could benefit from treatment.

The 12-year-old has been in custody since June 28, when he pointed a .38-caliber handgun at his friend, 12-year-old Alexander Khoudiakov, and pulled the trigger, killing him instantly.

The boy, who was 11 at the time, pleaded guilty Sept. 5 to manslaughter, admitting he intentionally fired the gun, but said he was not aware it was loaded.
