Child's death ruled homicide

By The Associated Press

CORSICANA, Texas- A preliminary autopsy on a 16-month-old boy who died while in the care of a Corsicana foster home found that he died of a blunt force injury and the justice of the peace has ruled the death a homicide.

"The question is, was it accidental or purposeful?" Corsicana Police Chief G.M. Cox said in a story in Thursday's editions of the Corsicana Daily Sun. "We're continuing to work on it."

The boy and his 3-year-old brother, both from Denton County, had been at the foster home for six days before the child died Monday. The child's name was not released.

The two were among five foster children at the home of the 50-year-old foster mother. Marissa Gonzales, spokeswoman for the Department of Family and Protective Services, said the other four children had been moved to other foster homes. She said all had been checked out and were fine.

Mesa Family Services, the private company which placed the children in the foster home, has referred all questions to the state investigators.

Justice of the Peace Connie Mayfield, who ordered the autopsy, said she had talked by phone to the grandmother of the boys.

"She's just distraught," Mayfield said.
