Court Docket — Brighton teen testifies that stepfather molested him

October 11, 2006

A 16-year-old Brighton teen testified Monday that his stepfather forced him to perform a sexual act, touched him inappropriately, and that if he told, he would be hurt.

The 45-year-old stepfather’s attorney, Lyle Dickson, counters that the teen is fabricating a story because he wanted his parents to remarry, and he did not like his mother marrying without first introducing her son to her new husband.

The Daily Press & Argus is not naming the stepfather, who is charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct, because it could identify his accuser.

The stepfather’s bench trial is expected to continue today before Circuit Judge David Reader.

The teen testified he was 10 or 11 years old when three sexual assaults took place at his family’s Brighton and Howell homes.

On cross-examination, Dickson tried to paint a picture of a troubled teen, who is highly medicated for a bipolar mood disorder and who lies a lot.

The teen admitted that he lies “30 percent of the time” and admitted that he had anger issues, which he has addressed through counseling at W.J. Maxey Boys Training School in Green Oak Township, where the teen is housed.

At one time, the teen said, he hit his mother with a piece of molding because he felt betrayed she left him alone with his stepfather, whom he also assaulted with the piece of molding because the stepfather would not let him go.

Dickson asked the teen if he was lying, and he said no.

“It’s the truth,” the teen said.
