Jan. 22, 2004:
16-year-old Kyle Young finishes a
court appearance on weapons charges
and is being escorted by guards
about 11 a.m. when he falls five
storeys down an elevator shaft to
his death. He is wearing handcuffs
and leg shackles.
Jan. 23, 2004:
Then-solicitor general Heather
Forsythe says there will
investigations will be conducted by
the police, the chief medical
examiner’s office and, because the
teen was in custody, a fatality
inquiry will be held.
Jan. 23, 2004:
The medical examiner determines that
Young’s death was caused by
“suspension by neck from a
structural bracket of the elevator
shaft.” Police say they weren’t told
whether Young suffered other
injuries.
Jan. 26, 2004:
Police investigating Young’s death
say there was no damage to the
elevator doors.
Feb. 19, 2004:
Police hire an independent
engineering company to examine the
elevator.
April 22, 2004:
Homicide detectives complete their
report on the death and give it to
the Crown, who will decide whether
charges are warranted.
July 21, 2004:
Then-justice minister Dave Hancock
says no charges will be laid against
the two guards escorting Young when
he fell to his death, and that they
used reasonable force.
Aug. 18, 2004:
Fatality inquiry, slated to start in
September, is put over until
January.
