New School Helps Students With Autism

The state's first scharter school for children with autism is open, and class is in session.

The grass may not be in yet outside the school, but the classrooms are filling up quickly at the Spectrum academy in North Salt Lake. "This is the dream of a very dedicated group of parents who are seeking an alternative to the education their children were going to be receiving from the state," said Board of Trustees President Shelly Carter.

Carter says the school is designed to help students with high functioning autism and asperger's syndrome reach their full potential.

Principal Melissa Aubrey says they have about 190 students. "We've got people who have moved here from out of state to get into our school, and then we've got parents transporting their kids from as far away as Orem and Huntsville every day," she said.

The school has students from kindergarten to 8th grade.
