Police: At least 5 boys abused

Plano: Several say ex-teacher at preschool assaulted them there

September 15, 2006

By KIM BREEN / The Dallas Morning News

Four new charges have been filed against a Plano teaching assistant and former preschool teacher accused last week of molesting a child.

Broderick Standberry, 34, met three of the five children involved while working at Christie Elementary School or Tutor Time in Plano, according to court records.

He was charged Wednesday with three additional counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child by contact. Mr. Standberry was charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault last week.

The charges involve five boys. Police would not release further information, including the ages of the children. Plano police Officer Rick McDonald said the investigation continues in case other children come forward.

Mr. Standberry on Wednesday turned himself in at the Collin County Jail, where he remains in lieu of $350,000 bail. He declined an interview. It was unclear Thursday who his attorney is.

Work reviews positive

Mr. Standberry was fired in April from Tutor Time in Plano, a preschool and day-care center, for being there without permission after hours. Multiple boys accuse him of taking them to the center for sexual activity after business hours. He had worked there since 2002.

The Plano school district placed Mr. Standberry on paid leave pending the outcome of the police investigation. He has worked as a teaching assistant at Christie Elementary since 1997.

Mr. Standberry received positive reviews at both jobs, according to school district personnel records and day-care officials.

Two boys told police that they met Mr. Standberry when they attended Christie. They said he took them and their friends to dinner, movies and other activities. Afterward, both boys said, he took them to the day-care center, where they had sexual contact, according to court records.

It isn't clear from court records whether he took the boys to the center one at a time or together. One boy reported having intercourse with Mr. Standberry four or five times in 2006. The other said sexual activity began three years ago.

After Mr. Standberry was charged last week, the Christie principal sent a note home to parents explaining that no Christie student was involved in the alleged abuse. School district officials didn't return a call for comment Thursday about the new charges.

A third boy told police that Mr. Standberry took him into a closet at Tutor Time and had the child fondle him, according to court documents. Mr. Standberry was the boy's teacher at the day care, which enrolls infants and children through age 12.

'Obviously concerned'

Amy Popp, a spokeswoman for Tutor Time's parent company, Learning Care Group Inc. in Michigan, said Thursday that she couldn't comment about the new charges because she hadn't seen them. She previously said it appeared that no day-care students were involved.

"We're obviously concerned," she said. "While he was employed with us, we never had any complaints by any parents for any misconduct."

A fourth boy told police he'd known Mr. Standberry since he was 5. He told police he had sexual contact with him numerous times, according to court records.

The boy involved in the charge filed last week told police that he had sex with Mr. Standberry monthly for about four years after hours at the day care center, court documents say.
