12-year-old with West Nile virus dies in Idaho

NORWOOD, Mass. - The West Nile virus may have struck again, this time claiming a 12-year-old boy's life last Friday.

Rocco Magliozzi, from Norwood was bitten by a mosquito while in Idaho. Health officials have confirmed that he had the virus; however, they have not yet declared the cause of death.

West Nile facts

Rocco, the adoptive son of Philip and Teresa Magliozzi, was at camp in Boise to help him cope with the emotional difficulties he felt as an adoptive child.
 

Philip said his son feared he was not special and Teresa "wanted Rocco to have peace." She recalled a letter he wrote home before he died, "My mother always said God wanted me to be in this family and I believe her now."

Teresa acknowledged the camp's success but said, "who could have predicted that he would have gotten bit by a bug?"

However, the camp was in Idaho, the state that happens to have the highest number of West Nile cases in the country, totaling 25 in humans.

Rocco's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
