Idaho Facing Cases of West Nile Virus
August 2, 2006

Idaho experiences its first West Nile virus death ever.

A boy has died from the virus after he was bit by a mosquito at a camp in Gooding. Rocco Magliozzi died last week at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise from a rare combination of West Nile and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Doctors believe Magliozzi’s body couldn't handle both.

It began at Camp SUWS where the 12-year-old from Massachusetts was attending camp.

About 1 percent of West Nile cases are severe. Only 15 percent of those are deadly. As for the Rocky Mountain fever, about 20 percent are severe. However, in Rocco's extremely rare case, when they are combined, they can be devastating.

Health officials would like you to know the signs and symptoms of West Nile virus and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. They include flu-like symptoms, fever, headaches and muscle cramps. Probably the most distinctive is a rash that starts around the feet and hands. Doctors say it’s best to get treated early, but it is hard when the symptoms are so common.

"The problem is these are very rare in Idaho and the signs and symptoms are so common," said Dr. Gary Soucie.

Health officials want to stress that these diseases are very rare, and the chances of getting both of them at the same time is extremely unusual.
