A WISBECH couple have drafted in a former SAS sergeant major to help them run a £375-a-week 'boot camp' in Thetford Forest.

Red Beret Boot Camps will offer youngsters discipline, motivation and confidence building exercises and activities away from the distractions of their usual lifestyles.

The couple believe parents will be eager to sign up teenagers with behavioural problems.

They have drafted in the former SAS officer, who once worked with the royal family, to mastermind the project.

Character-building boot camps are already a big hit in America but Sharon King says the idea is new in this country. Her partner, Mark, is project manager.

Ms King said: "We just believe that sometimes the softly, softly approach doesn't always work. The idea is to be firm but sensitive, you need to enforce boundaries and discipline.

"This is not a kind of punishment it is to boost their confidence and make them feel good about themselves."

She urged parents not be put off by the boot camp title. She said: "It might have some negative connotations but it will not be case of a team leader shouting at the children. They will be firm but understanding and the children will be very safe."

Typical activities will include team building and survival skills, orienteering, hiking, cooking, problem solving, anger management and motivational exercises.

After the camps youngsters will be given advice on where they can seek help for particular problems such as anger management, alcohol abuse and eating disorders.

All staff are subject to criminal records checks to ensure the safety of youngsters and Red Beret Boot Camps is a member of SAFE - Safe Activities For Everyone - a partnership ensuring national standards in child protection and health and safety.
