Royal Peak / Royal Gorge Academy News

In January 2007 Royal Gorge Academy, previously known as Royal Peak Academy, director, Randall Hinton was arrested on multiple counts of third-degree assault and for reckless endangerment. In Colorado, that means he placed another person, in this case, at risk of serious bodily injury.”

Hinton was seen on tape admitting to pepper spraying a child, Kerry "Layne" Brown, multiple times per day for eight or nine months. Kerry Layne Brown died June 6, 2006. He suffered for years, dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from the months of abuse he endured during his stay at Tranquility Bay in Jamaica. UPDATE

 Randall Hinton convicted of child abuse
 Randall Hinton is a long-time business associate of
 Robert Lichfield. This is not the first time Hinton has
 been accused of abusing children. Parents and former
 victims have been alleging he abused children for years.
 This time he got caught, arrested, and tried by a jury
 of his peers. He has been convicted of his crimes and
 he is scheduled to be sentenced in November 2007.

 Randall Hinton worked at Tranquility Bay, a WWASPS facility in Jamaica. Kerry Layne
 Brown was a student there. Hinton was quoted as saying: ""I think I can remember
 Layne being pepper-sprayed more than once a day. I know he was pepper-sprayed
 more than two times a day. I don't think it would have been more than three times ...
 and from somebody on the outside looking in, I would say it would be abusive."

A documentary about Tranquility Bay aired in Europe. The narrator said: "The man who tortured Layne was Randall Hinton. The following is an account of what Hinton said in an interview with reporters:"

“Violence … as in violent kids? Violent staff? Violent programs? Ah, ya." ... he was pepper-sprayed by myself and by Jay Kay. I think we were the only ones who could actually pepper-spray students. I think I can remember Kerry Layne being pepper-sprayed more than once in a day. I know he was pepper-sprayed more than two times in a day. I don’t think it would have been more than three times.”

“... And from somebody on the outside looking in I would say it was abusive. For somebody that stayed with him 24/7 I would say I received as much abuse as he did as a staff. But that’s what we’re getting paid to do.”

“Restraints could be used - mechanical devices could be used - pepper-spray could be used to gain control of your child. It’s just a job that, that helps people. Instead of the pizza coming to you we’ll come and pick the pizza up and take it and let it get cook for a while, in a sense. Until it’s ready to come home and then you get a brand new hot pizza.”
